SUMMARY:Poetry of Movement with Peggy Lamb: Moving Through Writing
DESCRIPTION:This is your chance to discover how delightfully creative you are! Come play with us as we explore the relationship between the language of words and the language of the body. As we dance the inexpressible\, we will come to know the symbolic language of movement and the cellular wisdom that swims through our bodies. Without judgment or criticism\, we will write our lives\, our dances\, our songs\, and our poetry. Using gentle stretches and movement exercises\, we will open our body’s mind to let our words flow.\n\nPrevious movement and/or writing experience is NOT required.\n\n\nThis class meets every Saturday morning from 10-11 am CT\, September 17th through November 5th\, 2022 at Conley-Guerrero Senior Center at 808 Nile St\, Austin\, TX 78702. The class is donation based and limited to 16 participants. Register here.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Body Shift Intensive: Dancing in Community with Karenne H. Koo
DESCRIPTION:Dancing in Community \nwith Karenne H. Koo from Dancesequences \nAn Introduction to Mettler-based Group Dance Improvisation \nSeptember 14 and 15\, 2019 \nSaturday: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm (lunch break)\nSunday: 12:00 – 3:00 pm \nIn Austin – Location to be announced \nRegister here! \nThis workshop is designed to encourage movement expressions through improvisation techniques founded upon the free approach to dance and movement pioneered by Barbara Mettler. A group body\, like an individual body\, has separate members. The members of the individual body are head\, hands\, feet\, etc. The members of a group body are persons. Although different\, members of a group body\, like members of an individual body\, are capable of moving together as an integrated whole\, expressing unified movement feeling.” (The Nature of Dance as a Creative Art Activity) \n \nNo prior dance experience needed. SUMMARY:Body Shift Foundations Class
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get your body moving\, but don’t know where to begin? Are you intimidated by typical dance classes because you feel like you don’t fit in? Body Shift has a solution to bring out the dancer in us all! We offer you Foundations – an improvisational dance class for ALL people – especially designed to be accessible to those with little to no dance/movement experience. \nEach class we will explore ideas like developing body awareness\, non-verbal communication\, understanding of time/rhythm and choice making to support students in the discovery of their own movement language. We will learn how to allow our bodies to breath and move in ways that feel good to each person in the room without judgement. \nPeople of all unique mental and physical characteristics are invited to participate. Our goal is to offer a class where there are no wrong choices so everyone in the room feels empowered and successful to come and be as they are. Material in this class will be strongly based on the DanceAbility method\, an approach to dance for people with and without disabilities. No movement experience necessary to join. Drop in occasionally or join us every month; open ended attendance. \nThe Foundations class takes place at McBeth Recreation Center (2401 Columbus Dr\, Austin\, TX 78746) every 3rd Monday of the month from 7:00-8:30pm. SUMMARY:Body Shift Elements Class
DESCRIPTION:The Elements class takes place every 2nd Saturday of the month from 2:30-4:30pm at the Town Lake YMCA in the large group exercise room on the first floor. \nClass will be taught by Amy Morrow. \n//Gaga for All// \nJoin us to experience Gaga/people for the first half of class followed by a Toolbox Session where we will experiment with tools not rules and find each person’s voice inside the movement language. \nAmy will guide participants using a series of evocative instructions that build one on top of the other. Rather than copying a particular movement\, each participant in the class will actively explore these instructions\, discovering how he or she can interpret the information and perform the task at hand. Gaga/people classes offer a creative framework for participants to connect to their bodies and imaginations\, increase their physical awareness\, improve their flexibility and stamina\, and experience the pleasure of movement in a welcoming\, accepting atmosphere. \nNo previous dance experience is needed. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to dance barefoot or in socks. It is advisable to bring a bottle of water and a towel for use after class. \n  \nAmy Morrow is an Austin-based teacher\, choreographer\, consultant\, & founder of AM Arts. Certified in 2012 by Ohad Naharin in the inaugural teacher training program\, Morrow travels internationally offering Gaga & Toolbox workshops as well as Ballet & Indian Dance. In 2015\, AM Arts established The Theorists\, a collective of artist citizens who collaborate internationally to produce homegrown art. Their dance\, film\, & music collaborations invited to present in TLV\, NY\, Delhi\, Puebla\, Guadalajara\, Cuernavaca\, México City\, DFW\, Tulsa\, ABQ\, Birmingham\, Huntsville\, Richmond\, Detroit\, & Houston\, and annually in Austin during Theorist Fest. Awards include the 2017 Austin Critic’s Table Award for Best Dancer as well as the Dance Council of North Texas Artful Dance\, Austin Emerging Arts Leadership Award\, Community Initiatives\, CORE\, & Capacity Building funding from the Austin Cultural Arts Division to produce programming for collaborators of diverse backgrounds\, abilities\, & ages. Graduating with a B.F.A. Dance Honors\, Morrow’s senior thesis contextualized multi-disciplinary collaborations cross-culturally under the mentorship of Jesse Zaritt. \n  \nElements is an on-going class in which we study dance and movement improvisation as well as somatics. DanceAbility is our foundational method with which we work to ensure inclusion. It is an equal collaboration and learning environment for every ‘body’ regardless of unique physical or mental characteristics. No gym membership is required to attend. Open to adults age 18 and up; all abilities and experience levels. No registration necessary. Fee for class is on a sliding scale from $5-$20\, cash or check accepted. You can pay the class fee online here. See you at the Y! \nFor more information email Olivia O’Hare or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Body Shift at The Contemporary Austin
DESCRIPTION:As part of Abraham Cruzvillegas’s current exhibit of sculptural objects at The Contemporary Austin\, he has generously invited a number of artists to “activate” the installation. We’re excited to announce that Body Shift has been asked to bring work into the gallery and participate with this community of artists. Our offering will take place on Saturday\, May 25th and will be in two parts – a performance and a workshop both in the same day at 700 Congress Ave. More info here. \n– 3pm performance – Brandon Gonzalez and Lauren Tietz direct an improvised ensemble performance that responds to Cruzvillegas’s installation as well as celebrates the spirit of Body Shift. The “activation” brings together a diverse group of people in rehearsal and performance to investigate attention\, attunement\, and affection. In a world that is often harsh\, numb\, and isolating\, an ethics of care encourages relational practices of embodied presence. What does it mean to be present to one’s own experience while being present with that of another? How do we hold more than one perspective? Performers explore their relations through the moment-to-moment actions of movement and touch. Can we arrive together as a multiplicity of bodies (and objects) as a way of rejuvenating\, as well as receiving and giving support? \n– 4:30pm workshop – Following the performance\, Olivia O’Hare and Veronica DeWitt will facilitate a participatory workshop open to the public. We will use exercises from the DanceAbility method of improvisational dance to offer a direct experience of dance as a way to explore the theme of care as well as respond to Cruzvillegas’s idea of autoconstruccion – to make something out of nothing – in relationship to identity – how can we know who we are until we allow the time to attend to our own sensations and then see or sense ourselves in relationship to other people around us and our environment? How can we create our own autoconstruccion with the material of our bodies\, our experience\, and the space that Cruzvillegas has created? \nWe encourage you to stay for both events! You are invited to participate in or observe the workshop. If you plan to participate\, please wear clothes you can comfortably move and stretch in (no skirts or large jewelry). There will be refreshments available on the roof deck during the break from 4-4:30pm. The museum is fully accessible.

SUMMARY:Body Shift Elements Class
DESCRIPTION:The Elements class takes place every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 2:30-4:30pm at the Town Lake YMCA in the large group exercise room on the first floor. \nClass will be taught by Tanya Winters. \n//E Pluribus Unum// \nCollective consciousness…hive mind…group mind. Regardless of the term you use\, from ants to bees to humans all living things are stronger when they work together. In this Elements class\, we’ll explore what it’s like to move as a group and how our individuality contributes to a whole. We’ll play with concepts like follow and lead; action and response; and traveling together. We’ll see how these concepts deepen our sense of self\, support us in adding to our movement repertoire\, strengthen our listening skills\, and encourage us to see beyond our selves. \n  \nSimply\, Tanya loves to dance! She enjoys pushing the boundaries of art and disability. She began dancing in 2007 at Austin Community College and has been a regular Body Shift participant since its inception. She has had the privilege of studying with several wonderful dancers including Alito Alessi\, Nina Martin\, Karen Nelson\, and Stephen Koplowitz. Tanya became a certified DanceAbility instructor in 2011. She has participated in many student projects including the Justice Project\, The Way You Move Your Body\, Bodies in Public Space\, and Being/With Others. She has enjoyed dancing in several Body Shift pieces including Crippin’ the Streets\, Your Way of Thinking\, and Echo. She is a co-choreographer of Together and Apart and is currently working on a solo piece called Who am I Now. SUMMARY:Body Shift Elements Class
DESCRIPTION:The Elements class takes place every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 2:30-4:30pm at the Town Lake YMCA in the large group exercise room on the first floor. \n(Note: Only one class in February!) \nClass will be taught by Lauren Tietz. \n//Body as Archive// \nPlease join us for the next Body Shift Elements class where we will dive into fundamentals of Lisa Nelson’s Tuning Scores while we also explore our body as personal archive. As an artist I have been exploring questions about identity\, lineage\, and the ancestors. For this class we will work with solo and group tuning as well as take some time to remember (through movement) what has influenced us\, shaped us\, in palpable and invisible ways. Depending on the group’s interests and the timing of class\, this might involve some writing/speaking in addition to witnessing and reflecting movement created. \n  \nLauren Tietz has been working in various settings from forests in Santa Fe\, New Mexico to the Rio Grande of Big Bend Texas to the caves of Cappadoccia\, Turkey to map and locate the human body in the larger natural world. As a dance artist and filmmaker she has collaborated with many different artists and groups across disciplines along her path. \nInfluenced by the phenomena of the senses\, reflexes\, and myriad survival methods humans employ in response to danger\, safety\, pleasure\, and poetics she sees the body as personal and cultural archive. From this intimate perspective Lauren is curious about how our relationship to our own body might be a window to perceive our larger relationship to the body of the earth. What is heard\, hidden\, forgotten\, saved\, remembered? \nLauren’s collaborations with other artists span from 2001 to today. She is a teacher\, dancer\, experimental filmmaker\, and interdisciplinary artist. She was the founder of the Improvisation Movement Project (IMP) that worked as a collective devising and performing new dance works beginning in 2004. \nIn 2011 she completed her MFA at Transart Institute. Her dance films have been screened at: On The Wall: Berlin Dance on Film Series/ Non Fiction (2010)\, The Not Festival: Curated by Luis Lara Malvacias\, NY (2011) and The 5th International Video Art Festival\, Cuba (2013 – SSFS)\, Big Medium (2015) EAST Austin Studio Tour (2016)\, Blackbox gallery (2017)\, Experimental response Cinema Local Filmmakers Showcase (2017)\, Austin Dance Festival (2018). \nIn addition to teaching classes\, workshops\, and retreats Lauren also has a private practice in biodynamic craniosacral therapy (EarthSkyBodyworks). She works with a diverse group of clients and offers support in rebalancing and healing from various life events and stressful experiences. She appreciates the connections between these two sides of her life: the creative energy utilized to devise new artworks and the creative energy utilized to help people to heal personal and cultural wounds. See you at the Y! \nFor more information email Olivia O’Hare or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Body Shift Elements Class
DESCRIPTION:The Elements class takes place every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 2:30-4:30pm at the Town Lake YMCA in the large group exercise room on the first floor. SUMMARY:On Display Austin 2018
DESCRIPTION:Join Body Shift and a cast of local dancers\, actors\, and activists of diverse ages\, abilities\, and backgrounds as we present Heidi Latsky’s ON DISPLAY at Austin Central Library on December 3rd from 6:30-8pm. \nON DISPLAY is meant to be viewed as an art installation so you may come and go as you please during the performance time. Cost is FREE! \nON DISPLAY is a deconstructed art exhibit/fashion show and commentary on the body as spectacle and society’s obsession with body image. It turns a cast of diverse and extreme bodies into a sculpture court where the performers are the sculptures. ON DISPLAY began as a simple human sculpture court and is now a movement\, a growing portfolio of works that explore and demonstrate inclusion through art. \nWe’ve always been taught not to stare; not to look at someone deeply because it might offend them; that if someone “different” catches our eye we have objectified them. This is the life of the viewer. Alternatively\, should we possess a birthmark\, a glorious height\, or unknown disability we risk being too noticeable and often ostracized or worse. This is the life of the viewed. \nIn both lives there is a harsh limitation where one does not have the time to see beyond mere characteristics and the other cannot be seen as anything but other. How can we possibly create a safer space for both to really look? \nON DISPLAY Austin is the local platform of an annual worldwide initiative ON DISPLAY Global that evolved out of Heidi Latsky Dance’s partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office and the UN in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is a sculpture court where the performers are the sculptures. \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.
