For updates\, sign up for our Community Conversations email list here. Email eric@artsparktx.org if you have any questions. Please let us know one week in advance if you need any accommodations. \nWe are excited for Nathan Brown to facilitate our May 2021 workshop! \nNathan Brown\nAbout Nathan Brown\nNathan Brown is an author\, songwriter\, and award-winning poet living in Wimberley\, Texas. He holds a PhD in English and Journalism from the University of Oklahoma where he’s taught for over 20 years. He served as Poet Laureate for the State of Oklahoma in 2013/14\, and now travels full-time performing readings\, concerts\, workshops and speaking on creativity\, poetry\, and songwriting. \nNathan has published over 20 books. Most recent are his new collection of poems\, In the Days of Our Unrest\, the second in a series now known as the Pandemic Poems Project\, that deals with the year of Covid-19\, and a new travel memoir Just Another Honeymoon in France: A Vagabond at Large. Karma Crisis: New and Selected Poems\, was a finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize and the Oklahoma Book Award. His earlier book\, Two Tables Over\, won the 2009 Oklahoma Book Award. His album of all-original songs\, The Streets of San Miguel\, was released this last year. \nHe’s taught memoir\, poetry\, songwriting\, and performance workshops from Tuscany and Ireland to the Sisters Folk Festival in Oregon\, the Taos Poetry Festival\, the Woody Guthrie Festival\, Laity Lodge\, the Everwood Farmstead Foundation in Wisconsin\, as well as for Blue Rock Artist Ranch near Austin\, Texas. \nAnd his online live video series The Fire Pit Sessions—inspired by the Pandemic Poems Project—has had over 35\,000 views. At over 100 episodes now\, in which Nathan reads a few poems from the book series and performs a song at the end\, now has an established following of loyal viewers. \nNaomi Shihab Nye said about Nathan’s book\, My Salvaged Heart: “Brave new world! The sizzle of couplings and uncouplings – attraction and romance\, ineffable magnetism\, mysterious as ever – but doused with a savory dose of Nathan Brown humor\, a tilted long-ranging eye that sees the next bend in the road even when he’s standing right here\, firmly planted.”

So far she has toured in 45 states and 9 countries\, captivating audiences around the world with her unique mix of haunting original songs and traditional fiddle tunes. Gaelynn Lea has appeared in several major festivals over the years\, including SXSW\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, and Reykjavik Arts Festival. She has opened for well-known bands such as Wilco\, The Decemberists\, LOW\, The Jayhawks\, and the industrial rock supergroup Pigface. \n  \nGaelynn Lea poses with her violin.\nGaelynn Lea performs from her electric wheelchair. She began playing violin 26 years ago after a creative music teacher helped her to adapt a playing style that suits her frame. Lea holds her instrument like a tiny cello and loops her classically trained rhythms and melodies with her Memory Man pedal to create a “symphonic cacophony that is both glorious in its reach and profoundly introspective”. (Ear to the Ground) Her original songs explore the contrasting nature of existence—dark and light\, birth and death\, anger and forgiveness\, sorrow and joy. Gaelynn Lea’s “music is imbued with a melancholic poetry so potent it must be heard to be believed.” (Boston Globe) \n  \nIn addition to performing and recording\, Gaelynn also does speaking engagements about Disability Rights\, finding inner freedom\, and accessibility in the arts. In recent years\, she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change. So far she’s been able to share her perspective on PBS NewsHour\, BBC World News\, The Moth Radio Hour\, and through two widely-viewed TEDx Talks. \nGaelynn Lea is currently working on a memoir about her touring adventures and disability advocacy that she plans to release in 2022. Since the Coronavirus pandemic halted her traveling\, Gaelynn has been performing a weekly concert on YouTube to fans who join her every Sunday afternoon from all over the world. \nAbout ART SPARK TEXAS\nArt Spark Texas challenges perceptions of how people contribute by creating an arts-inspired\, inclusive community of individuals with diverse abilities. \nIf you enjoy our Community Conversations Songwriting Series\, please consider making a Donation today.

At an early age\, he was exposed to the literary value of song form\, and formed his own unique style of storytelling. Appalachian grooves and melodies coupled with lyrics\, strange and beautiful. He encountered solid recognition for his talent and hard driving music and lyrical style for his first two solo records Whisky Priest and Tijuana Bible\, putting him into the upper realm of Austin rockers. His long awaited third installment\, Amateur Theater\, was released in the fall of 2019. \nThe highlight of his active schedule is hosting weekly songwriting and guitar workshop in San Marcos for Armed Forces veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress for a program he founded called Soldier Songs and Voices. It’s inspiring—it’s a beautiful thing.
