SUMMARY:Registration now open: Speaking Advocate Training Program
DESCRIPTION:2021 New Speaking Advocate Training Program. Now you can invite friends from all over Texas These classes are an updated online version of our Opening Minds\, Opening Doors (OMOD) public speaker training program for adults with disabilities. We combine the art of storytelling with public speaking skills\, so our speakers can bring their stories to the general public and challenge misconceptions about what it means to live with a disability. The new program will include training to participate in creating content and producing our new podcast to be launched in 2021. \nClick here for link to 2021 Program registration A shout out to Texas State Independent Living Council (Texas SILC) for their generous support in this effort.

DESCRIPTION:The theme for this month’s Speaking Advocates meeting is “The film I would like to see would be…” \nWhat would you like to see in a movie? Do you see yourself represented in movies? If you have\, which movie? Imagine the story and the characters of the movie you would write. \nOur Virtual Speaking Advocates Group will use GoToMeeting video conferencing and web conferencing software; join through the app\, web browser\, or phone. \nAttending meetings online can be frustrating so we are opening up the meeting at 12:30 in case anyone needs help setting up. The meeting will start at 1pm as usual. \nPlease see the Speaking Advocates email from boye@artsparktx.org to access the meeting link information.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Love You - Help You
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 29\, 2020 @ 1pm Room 161 \nLove You – Help You. February is the month of love and relationships. Any relationship is a complicated balance of many factors\, togetherness vs independence\, my needs vs your needs\, expectations vs honesty\, listening vs speaking. This dance seems to be far more complicated for those of us with disabilities who must choreograph this delicate ballet with overprotective parents\, partners\, caregivers and even strangers. \nWe want to hear about your successes and failures with defining and claiming your independence while staying connected to those you love and need. \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1 to 3 PM in Room 161 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email boye@artsparktx.org to RSVP or learn more.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: What Inspires Us
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Speaking Advocates theme is “What Inspires Us“. \nThe experiences of people with disabilities are frequently distorted as inspiration for non-disabled people. The term “inspiration porn\,” coined by the late comedian/activist Stella Young\, refers to exploitative portrayals of people with disabilities in which their regular everyday activities are re-framed as brave or inspirational while the same activities\, when performed by non-disabled people\, earn little recognition. Join the Speaking Advocates this month to reclaim the original meaning of inspiration as that which emboldens us to pursue great ambitions\, persevere in accomplishing our biggest goals\, or elevating our consciousness to a higher plane. It’s your turn to say what inspires you. Email Ms. Boye to RSVP or learn more. \nFollow our Facebook group page for updates. \nImage description: Comedian Stella Young sits proudly in her power wheelchair wearing bright red high-heeled shoes with white polka dots held up for the camera to see. She looks straight into the camera with a mischievous grin on her face.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Shake It Off!
DESCRIPTION:The falling leaves of autumn provide an apt analogy to the process by which we dispel the habits\, possessions\, and relationships we have outgrown. And in doing so\, we bring forth the opportunity for new growth to emerge when the next spring arrives. For us\, this letting go can be a terrifying prospect; but within the seasons\, it is integral to the cycles of death and rebirth\, for the green buds and vibrant flowers of spring can only manifest on seemingly lifeless branches. \nThis month we invite you to speak about the moments where shedding the past became your only way forward\, where casting the weight of the outgrown lightened your load just enough to carry on. What are the things you had to shake off\, however haltingly? What new opportunities emerged in their place? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 161 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Moments of Growth
DESCRIPTION:“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back to safety.” –Abraham Maslow \nGrowing is an essential part of life. Sometimes we are lucky enough to choose when and how we grow; other times growth is sprung upon us – and often painfully. In either case we can be relatively certain that resisting personal growth ultimately creates more trouble. This month we invite you to share the definitive moments that provided you the opportunity to grow into the person you are now. What circumstances or knowledge compelled you to evolve? What insights did you glean from these spurts of growth? And how do these moments continue to shape who you are\, and who you want to be? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 101 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Independence
DESCRIPTION:July is the month we celebrate our nation’s independence. It also marks possibly the most important victory in the history of the Disability Rights Movement: the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For people with disabilities\, independence has different meanings. On one hand\, it is the ultimate goal; if achieved\, it signifies the successful dismantling of the social and political barriers that truly “disable” us. If\, on the other hand\, independence proves to be a logistical impossibility\, we adjust our definition accordingly\, and independence becomes something closer to self-determination in which we set the terms for the assistance we require – or in the words of our movement’s slogan\, Nothing About Us Without Us. This month we invite you to share your own definition of independence: what does independence look like for you\, what are the obstacles that stand in your way to a self-determined life\, how do you become independent? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 101 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Home Ain't What It Used To Be
DESCRIPTION:Home is where we start\, yet it is much more than simply a place. It is the reference point by which we measure how we ourselves have changed\, it is how we interpret the changes swirling around us and observe the passage of time. And the more we change\, so too does our recollection of the past\, our remembrance of home. This month we invite you to share the ways in which your perception of home has shifted over time and how you have changed in the process. \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 130 of the AGE of Central Texas Building.
