SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Embarrassing Moments in School or Life

SUMMARY:Body Shift Foundations Class
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get your body moving\, but don’t know where to begin? Are you intimidated by typical dance classes because you feel like you don’t fit in? Body Shift has a solution to bring out the dancer in us all! We offer you Foundations – an improvisational dance class for ALL people – especially designed to be accessible to those with little to no dance/movement experience. \nEach class we will explore ideas like developing body awareness\, non-verbal communication\, understanding of time/rhythm and choice making to support students in the discovery of their own movement language. Students will have the opportunity to awaken their creativity\, notice habitual movement patterns in order to expand movement possibilities\, and have a lot of fun in the process. We will learn how to allow our bodies to breath and move in ways that feel good to each person in the room without judgement. \nPeople of all unique mental and physical characteristics are invited to participate. Our goal is to offer a class where there are no wrong choices so everyone in the room feels empowered and successful to come and be as they are. Material in this class will be strongly based on the DanceAbility method\, an approach to dance for people with and without disabilities. No movement experience necessary to join. Drop in occasionally or join us every month; open ended attendance. \nThe Foundations class takes place at McBeth Recreation Center (2401 Columbus Dr\, Austin\, TX 78746) every 3rd Monday of the month from 7:00-8:30pm. Sliding scale/donation based – $5-$20. Adults age 18 and up. \nNEW! You can now pay class fees online here. \nFor more information email Olivia O’Hare or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Home Ain't What It Used To Be
DESCRIPTION:Home is where we start\, yet it is much more than simply a place. It is the reference point by which we measure how we ourselves have changed\, it is how we interpret the changes swirling around us and observe the passage of time. And the more we change\, so too does our recollection of the past\, our remembrance of home. This month we invite you to share the ways in which your perception of home has shifted over time and how you have changed in the process. \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 130 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Audio Described Performance of “Antigonick”
DESCRIPTION:A contemporary translation of the classic Greek drama that asks\, “How do we care for the dead and how do we grieve amidst crisis?” Antigonick is strangely reimagined by the inimitable Classics scholar and award-winning poet\, Anne Carson. \nDirected by Salvage Vanguard’s co-producing Artistic Director Diana Lynn Small\, Antigonick stretches the boundaries of story in poetry and theater. Antigonick asks\, “What can one woman do in the face of unjust laws?” What is she willing to sacrifice? In this time worn story\, Carson points to the lessons we’re meant to learn from our past\, yet somehow fail to remember. \nPurchase tickets online or call 512-474-7886. Let the Salvage Vanguard know you want audio description. \n \n  \n

She enjoys pushing the boundaries of art and disability. She began dancing in 2007 at Austin Community College and has been a regular Body Shift participant since its inception.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Gaelynn Lea
DESCRIPTION:MINDPOP\, Art Spark Texas\, and The Vortex are honored to present An Evening with Gaelynn Lea. Lea is an American folk singer\, violinist\, public speaker and disability advocate. For this special presentation\, she will share her thinking about disability\, finding inner freedom\, and the power of music in education. She’ll also share a song or two with us at evening’s close! \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nAbout Gaelynn Lea: \nOn March 3\, 2016\, Gaelynn Lea was named the winner of NPR Music’s second-ever Tiny Desk Contest. The video entry of her original song “Someday We’ll Linger in the Sun” rose to the top of over 6\,100 submissions from around the nation\, chosen as the unanimous favorite among the contest’s six judges. The very next week\, Gaelynn performed a moving Tiny Desk Concert\, at which the show’s host Bob Boilen said “there was hardly a dry eye.” \nGaelynn Lea’s musical reach has expanded significantly because of the Tiny Desk Contest. She began touring nationally in September 2016 with her husband Paul in their 2002 Ford Econline – and they’ve been on the road ever since! View her tour schedule here. \nGaelynn has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta\, or Brittle Bones Disease. In recent years\, she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.
