SUMMARY:Art Spark Texas at Library Live!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Carver Branch Library for an afternoon of live music presented by Austin Public Library (APL) and Art Spark Texas! \nShow at 2:00 PM / Doors at 1:45 PM \nWith performances by:\nDude Choir\nCook and Rose \nFree and open to the public! \nAbout the musicians: \nEric Clow (aka Dude Choir when other friends are involved) is an artist torn between a classic rock past and dissonant future. He uses a mixture of humor\, sincerity\, and slightly off-key vocals to deliver thoughtful personal tunes. Stream his debut album here. \nChristopher Cook and Emmy Rose are a duo from Central Texas\, playing original music rooted in folk and blues. Their songs of sadness\, loss\, and defiance reflect their Western roots and longing for redemption. Christopher Cook plays finger-style guitar\, writes\, and sings. With over thirty years as a songwriter and performer\, he has been called “a torch singer with the heart of a poet.” Emmy Rose also sings and plays the harmonium\, a type of pump organ originally used in Indian music. Together\, the blend of Emmy’s direct\, clear voice with Christopher’s ragged tenor produces an unusual sound described as “diamonds and gravel.” \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Body Shift Foundations Class
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get your body moving\, but don’t know where to begin? Are you intimidated by typical dance classes because you feel like you don’t fit in? Body Shift has a solution to bring out the dancer in us all! We offer you Foundations – an improvisational dance class for ALL people – especially designed to be accessible to those with little to no dance/movement experience. \nEach class we will explore ideas like developing body awareness\, non-verbal communication\, understanding of time/rhythm and choice making to support students in the discovery of their own movement language. Students will have the opportunity to awaken their creativity\, notice habitual movement patterns in order to expand movement possibilities\, and have a lot of fun in the process. We will learn how to allow our bodies to breath and move in ways that feel good to each person in the room without judgement. \nPeople of all unique mental and physical characteristics are invited to participate. Our goal is to offer a class where there are no wrong choices so everyone in the room feels empowered and successful to come and be as they are. Material in this class will be strongly based on the DanceAbility method\, an approach to dance for people with and without disabilities. No movement experience necessary to join. Drop in occasionally or join us every month; open ended attendance. \nThe Foundations class takes place at McBeth Recreation Center (2401 Columbus Dr\, Austin\, TX 78746) every 3rd Monday of the month from 7:00-8:30pm. Sliding scale/donation based – $5-$20. Adults age 18 and up. \nNEW! You can now pay class fees online here. \nFor more information email Olivia O’Hare or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Moments of Growth
DESCRIPTION:“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back to safety.” –Abraham Maslow \nGrowing is an essential part of life. Sometimes we are lucky enough to choose when and how we grow; other times growth is sprung upon us – and often painfully. In either case we can be relatively certain that resisting personal growth ultimately creates more trouble. This month we invite you to share the definitive moments that provided you the opportunity to grow into the person you are now. What circumstances or knowledge compelled you to evolve? What insights did you glean from these spurts of growth? And how do these moments continue to shape who you are\, and who you want to be? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 101 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

Please contact us in advance to request other accommodations\, including ASL interpreting\, audio description\, etc. \nThis month we also have two featured guests: Spirit Thom and The Old Hats. \nSpirit Thom is a co-Founder of the Austin International Poetry Festival. These artists were nominated by members of their community and were chosen by a panel of their peers to be recognized for their artistry and advocacy. We believe their perseverance to ignite the creative power in everyone is something we can all celebrate. \nWe are excited to announce our 2019 Haven Allen Artist of the Year Award in memory of past board member\, Forrest Haven Street-Allen. This award is given to an artist with a disability who\, through a one-time creative act or a substantial record of achievement\, embodies the vision of Art Spark Texas. This award is being presented to Fort Worth artist Randy Souders. \nThe 2019 SPARK Award is given to an artist with a disability who embodies the spirit and purpose of Art Spark Texas. Dripping Springs artist Brandon Lack challenges perceptions of how people contribute through his artistic spirit on display through his imaginative and sometimes whimsical paintings. \nThe 2019 Director’s Commendation is given to an artist with a disability who\, through advocacy and art\, represents the inclusive world that Art Spark Texas works to create every day. San Antonio artist Susan Beattie is the founder and producer of the Mental Illness Awareness Week art exhibition\, held annually in San Antonio\, and she devotes her time year round to single handedly bring this important exhibition to the public. \nThis year\, we are pleased to announce the Lynn Marie Johnson Media Arts Award. Lynn Marie Johnson was a longtime employee of Art Spark Texas and a strong advocate for representation of people with disabilities on stage and in the media. She volunteered for numerous performance venues in Austin\, and served as panelist and judge for several film festivals throughout her career. This Award recognizes her unwavering dedication to\, and powerful impact on\, the lives of artists and patrons with disabilities across Texas. The inaugural 2019 Lynn Marie Johnson Media Arts Award is given to an artist with a disability in Texas who displays passion and commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities through the use of media arts\, i.e.\, video\, filmmaking\, photography\, etc. For their willingness to tackle difficult subjects with insight and biting humor\, we are pleased to award Gene Rodgers and David Dauber\, co-producers of The Gene And Dave Show with this award. \nFor more information contact Gina at 512-454-9912 or gina@artsparktx.org.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Shake It Off!
DESCRIPTION:The falling leaves of autumn provide an apt analogy to the process by which we dispel the habits\, possessions\, and relationships we have outgrown. And in doing so\, we bring forth the opportunity for new growth to emerge when the next spring arrives. For us\, this letting go can be a terrifying prospect; but within the seasons\, it is integral to the cycles of death and rebirth\, for the green buds and vibrant flowers of spring can only manifest on seemingly lifeless branches. \nThis month we invite you to speak about the moments where shedding the past became your only way forward\, where casting the weight of the outgrown lightened your load just enough to carry on. What are the things you had to shake off\, however haltingly? What new opportunities emerged in their place? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 161 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Art Spark Texas at Library Live!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Carver Branch Library for an afternoon of live music and art presented by Austin Public Library (APL) and Art Spark Texas. We are proud to present this showcase as part of Austin Veteran Arts Festival. Arrive at 11:30 AM for the opening reception of “From the Lens of a Veteran” photography exhibition! \nShow at 2:00 PM / Doors at 1:45 PM \nWith performances by:\nValor Alan\nMoana Tela\nNubia Emmon \nFree and open to the public! \nAbout the musicians: \nM.O.E (Moana Tela) is a singer-songwriter from American Samoa located in the South Pacific Ocean. M.O.E stands for Music Over Everything. The acronym was inspired by her love of diverse music. While visiting her mother’s island of Fiji\, she helped shape her outlook on music in a significant way. She realized the power of great energy expressed through music and was always prepared to perform. Although it was traditional to listen to island jams\, with reggae being the most popular sound. M.O.E was more interested in American music in the genres of hip-hop\, pop\, rap\, R&B\, and Rock. \nHearkening back to the nostalgic 90s when R&B/Hip Hop music was as versatile as its artists\, Nubia Emmon reminds us of that groundbreaking and exhilarating time period. She brings the cool laid back swag of an Aaliyah\, the energetic spontaneity of Left Eye’s rap and her own unique artistry to the music scene. She can move easily between performing danceable club tracks to a slow ballad such as “At Last” by Etta James. As unassuming as she is\, Nubia will you tell you she is your everyday home girl\, but make no mistake about it\, this R&B Singer/Rapper Nubia Emmon is the total package. From the “Capital of Live Music” – Austin\, Texas she comes from a family of artists including a distant cousin\, none other than The Queen of Gospel\, Mahalia Jackson. Realizing what it takes: sacrifice and hard work\, whether she is working in the studio\, at shows\, in the community or with other artists\, Nubia’s dream is to become a world class performer. Her fans seem to believe this too as she has been voted #1 by Austin listeners (Best Radio R&B Artist\, Best Female Radio Song and Best Female R&B Live). \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912.
