Stream his debut album here. \nChristopher Cook and Emmy Rose are a duo from Central Texas\, playing original music rooted in folk and blues. Their songs of sadness\, loss\, and defiance reflect their Western roots and longing for redemption. Christopher Cook plays finger-style guitar\, writes\, and sings. With over thirty years as a songwriter and performer\, he has been called “a torch singer with the heart of a poet.” Emmy Rose also sings and plays the harmonium\, a type of pump organ originally used in Indian music. DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get your body moving\, but don’t know where to begin? Are you intimidated by typical dance classes because you feel like you don’t fit in? Body Shift has a solution to bring out the dancer in us all! We offer you Foundations – an improvisational dance class for ALL people – especially designed to be accessible to those with little to no dance/movement experience. \nEach class we will explore ideas like developing body awareness\, non-verbal communication\, understanding of time/rhythm and choice making to support students in the discovery of their own movement language. Students will have the opportunity to awaken their creativity\, notice habitual movement patterns in order to expand movement possibilities\, and have a lot of fun in the process. We will learn how to allow our bodies to breath and move in ways that feel good to each person in the room without judgement. \nPeople of all unique mental and physical characteristics are invited to participate. Our goal is to offer a class where there are no wrong choices so everyone in the room feels empowered and successful to come and be as they are. Material in this class will be strongly based on the DanceAbility method\, an approach to dance for people with and without disabilities. No movement experience necessary to join. Drop in occasionally or join us every month; open ended attendance. \nThe Foundations class takes place at McBeth Recreation Center (2401 Columbus Dr\, Austin\, TX 78746) every 3rd Monday of the month from 7:00-8:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Presentation of Stand-Up Comedy debut performances by 7 Austin comics created during the Stand Up for Mental Health 2019 Workshop presented in partnership with Stand-Up Comic and Counselor David Granirer. \nMost people think you have to be nuts to do stand-up comedy. However\, Vancouver-based\, award-winning counselor and stand-up comic David Granirer has teamed up with Art Spark Texas to offer it as a form of therapy. Granirer\, who himself has depression\, is the founder of Stand Up For Mental Health\, a program teaching stand-up comedy to people with mental illness as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma. \nDoors will open at 7 PM\, and the show starts at 8 PM. \nTICKETS\nPrice $10 with a 2-item minimum food/or beverage purchase per person at the event. Tickets available at the door. Venue age restrictions 18 and up. \n \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nABOUT DAVID GRANIRER\nDavid Granirer\, RPC\, MPCC\, M.S.M\, is a counselor\, stand-up comic\, author and the founder\, in 2004\, of Stand Up for Mental Health whose work was featured in the VOICE Award winning documentary Cracking Up. He has trained Stand Up for Mental Health groups in partnership with various mental health organizations in over 50 cities in Canada\, the U.S.\, and Australia\, and has been recognized as one of the 150 Canadian Difference Makers in mental health. Granirer lives with his family in Vancouver\, British Columbia. \nABOUT CAP CITY COMEDY CLUB\nCap City Comedy Club is an old school comedy club featuring local comedians\, national acts and open-mike night. These artists were nominated by members of their community and were chosen by a panel of their peers to be recognized for their artistry and advocacy. We believe their perseverance to ignite the creative power in everyone is something we can all celebrate. \nWe are excited to announce our 2019 Haven Allen Artist of the Year Award in memory of past board member\, Forrest Haven Street-Allen. This award is given to an artist with a disability who\, through a one-time creative act or a substantial record of achievement\, embodies the vision of Art Spark Texas. This award is being presented to Fort Worth artist Randy Souders. \nThe 2019 SPARK Award is given to an artist with a disability who embodies the spirit and purpose of Art Spark Texas. Dripping Springs artist Brandon Lack challenges perceptions of how people contribute through his artistic spirit on display through his imaginative and sometimes whimsical paintings. \nThe 2019 Director’s Commendation is given to an artist with a disability who\, through advocacy and art\, represents the inclusive world that Art Spark Texas works to create every day. San Antonio artist Susan Beattie is the founder and producer of the Mental Illness Awareness Week art exhibition\, held annually in San Antonio\, and she devotes her time year round to single handedly bring this important exhibition to the public. \nThis year\, we are pleased to announce the Lynn Marie Johnson Media Arts Award. Lynn Marie Johnson was a longtime employee of Art Spark Texas and a strong advocate for representation of people with disabilities on stage and in the media. She volunteered for numerous performance venues in Austin\, and served as panelist and judge for several film festivals throughout her career. This Award recognizes her unwavering dedication to\, and powerful impact on\, the lives of artists and patrons with disabilities across Texas. DESCRIPTION:Application Deadline: Thursday\, January 2\, 2020 10:59pm CST\nThe Kennedy Center – Office of VSA and Accessibility -Now Accepting 2020 Playwright Discovery Applications! \nVSA Playwright Discovery Program – A Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program\nOpens September 1\, 2019 through January 2\, 2020. Young writers with disabilities and collaborative groups that include students with disabilities\, in the U.S. grades 6-12 (or equivalents) or ages 11-18 for non-U.S. students\, are invited to explore the disability experience through the art of writing for performance—in the form of plays\, screenplays\, or music theater. Writers are encouraged to craft short (10 minute) works from their own experiences and observations in the style of realism\, through the creation of fictional characters and settings\, or writing metaphorically or abstractly about the disability experience. \nLearn more about the 2020 Playwright Discovery Award Program and how to apply.
