SUMMARY:The Lion and The Pirate Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Share a story\, poem\, song\, or other talent in a fun and supportive neighborhood bookstore. The open mic is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us at least one week in advance to request other accommodations\, including ASL interpreting\, audio description\, etc. \nIn addition to our regular open mic for performers of all ages and abilities\, this month we are delighted to have a special guest\, Elizabeth L. Sammons\, who will share with us her debut novel\, The Lyra and the Cross. \nFriendship\, forgiveness and faith set the groundwork of The Lyra and the Cross\, a historical novel depicting the political and spiritual unrest in the first-century Roman Empire. Drawing on five years of historical research and on her own cross-cultural experience as journalist\, Peace Corps volunteer and interpreter\, Ohio author Elizabeth Sammons depicts a world as full of interfaith conflict and difficult choices as our own. Amidst familiar characters from the New Testament\, readers will find stories of a slave turned freedman\, a Greek orphan adopted into life as a Jew and two bittersweet love stories set against a background of cross-cultural conflict comparable to events we witness in the 21st century. \nElizabeth L. Sammons is a two-time recipient of the Ohio Arts Council’s Artists with Disability Access Program Award. She lives in Worthington\, Ohio\, holds an M.A. in journalism from Ohio State University\, and has lived in five foreign countries. Her love of both scripture and Greek mythology dates back to childhood. To her knowledge\, this is the only modern English-language novel featuring St. Stephen as its protagonist. \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912. \n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Gaelynn Lea
DESCRIPTION:MINDPOP\, Art Spark Texas\, and The Vortex are honored to present An Evening with Gaelynn Lea. Lea is an American folk singer\, violinist\, public speaker and disability advocate. For this special presentation\, she will share her thinking about disability\, finding inner freedom\, and the power of music in education. She’ll also share a song or two with us at evening’s close! \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nAbout Gaelynn Lea: \nOn March 3\, 2016\, Gaelynn Lea was named the winner of NPR Music’s second-ever Tiny Desk Contest. The video entry of her original song “Someday We’ll Linger in the Sun” rose to the top of over 6\,100 submissions from around the nation\, chosen as the unanimous favorite among the contest’s six judges. The very next week\, Gaelynn performed a moving Tiny Desk Concert\, at which the show’s host Bob Boilen said “there was hardly a dry eye.” \nGaelynn Lea’s musical reach has expanded significantly because of the Tiny Desk Contest. She began touring nationally in September 2016 with her husband Paul in their 2002 Ford Econline – and they’ve been on the road ever since! View her tour schedule here. \nGaelynn has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta\, or Brittle Bones Disease. In recent years\, she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.

SUMMARY:Body Shift Foundations Class
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get your body moving\, but don’t know where to begin? Are you intimidated by typical dance classes because you feel like you don’t fit in? Body Shift has a solution to bring out the dancer in us all! We offer you Foundations – an improvisational dance class for ALL people – especially designed to be accessible to those with little to no dance/movement experience. \nEach class we will explore ideas like developing body awareness\, non-verbal communication\, understanding of time/rhythm and choice making to support students in the discovery of their own movement language. Students will have the opportunity to awaken their creativity\, notice habitual movement patterns in order to expand movement possibilities\, and have a lot of fun in the process. We will learn how to allow our bodies to breath and move in ways that feel good to each person in the room without judgement. \nPeople of all unique mental and physical characteristics are invited to participate. Our goal is to offer a class where there are no wrong choices so everyone in the room feels empowered and successful to come and be as they are. Material in this class will be strongly based on the DanceAbility method\, an approach to dance for people with and without disabilities. No movement experience necessary to join. Drop in occasionally or join us every month; open ended attendance. \nThe Foundations class takes place at McBeth Recreation Center (2401 Columbus Dr\, Austin\, TX 78746) every 3rd Monday of the month from 7:00-8:30pm. Sliding scale/donation based – $5-$20. Adults age 18 and up. \nNEW! You can now pay class fees online here. \nFor more information email Olivia O’Hare or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Body Shift Elements Class
DESCRIPTION:The Elements class takes place every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 2:30-4:30pm at the Town Lake YMCA in the large group exercise room on the first floor. \nClass will be taught by Tanya Winters. \n//E Pluribus Unum// \nCollective consciousness…hive mind…group mind. Regardless of the term you use\, from ants to bees to humans all living things are stronger when they work together. In this Elements class\, we’ll explore what it’s like to move as a group and how our individuality contributes to a whole. We’ll play with concepts like follow and lead; action and response; and traveling together. We’ll see how these concepts deepen our sense of self\, support us in adding to our movement repertoire\, strengthen our listening skills\, and encourage us to see beyond our selves. \n  \nSimply\, Tanya loves to dance! She enjoys pushing the boundaries of art and disability. She began dancing in 2007 at Austin Community College and has been a regular Body Shift participant since its inception. She has had the privilege of studying with several wonderful dancers including Alito Alessi\, Nina Martin\, Karen Nelson\, and Stephen Koplowitz. Tanya became a certified DanceAbility instructor in 2011. She has participated in many student projects including the Justice Project\, The Way You Move Your Body\, Bodies in Public Space\, and Being/With Others. She has enjoyed dancing in several Body Shift pieces including Crippin’ the Streets\, Your Way of Thinking\, and Echo. She is a co-choreographer of Together and Apart and is currently working on a solo piece called Who am I Now. \n  \nElements is an on-going class in which we study dance and movement improvisation as well as somatics. DanceAbility is our foundational method with which we work to ensure inclusion. It is an equal collaboration and learning environment for every ‘body’ regardless of unique physical or mental characteristics. No gym membership is required to attend. Open to adults age 18 and up; all abilities and experience levels. No registration necessary. Fee for class is on a sliding scale from $5-$20\, cash or check accepted. See you at the Y! \nNEW! SUMMARY:Audio Described Performance of “Antigonick”
DESCRIPTION:A contemporary translation of the classic Greek drama that asks\, “How do we care for the dead and how do we grieve amidst crisis?” Antigonick is strangely reimagined by the inimitable Classics scholar and award-winning poet\, Anne Carson. \nDirected by Salvage Vanguard’s co-producing Artistic Director Diana Lynn Small\, Antigonick stretches the boundaries of story in poetry and theater. Antigonick asks\, “What can one woman do in the face of unjust laws?” What is she willing to sacrifice? In this time worn story\, Carson points to the lessons we’re meant to learn from our past\, yet somehow fail to remember. \nPurchase tickets online or call 512-474-7886. Let the Salvage Vanguard know you want audio description. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Home Ain't What It Used To Be
DESCRIPTION:Home is where we start\, yet it is much more than simply a place. It is the reference point by which we measure how we ourselves have changed\, it is how we interpret the changes swirling around us and observe the passage of time. And the more we change\, so too does our recollection of the past\, our remembrance of home. This month we invite you to share the ways in which your perception of home has shifted over time and how you have changed in the process. \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 130 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.
