SUMMARY:The Lion and The Pirate Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Share a story\, poem\, song\, or other talent in a fun and supportive neighborhood bookstore. The open mic is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us in advance to request other accommodations\, including ASL interpreting\, audio description\, etc. \nThis month we also have two featured guests: Spirit Thom and The Old Hats. \nSpirit Thom is a co-Founder of the Austin International Poetry Festival. He is an improvising bard who works with WORDJAZZ LOWSTARS\, and used to tour with MOTHER GONG\, KANGAROO MOON\, etc. He had his own bands FUTURE NOW in England\, and WE ARE ALIVE! in Australia—and Thom believes his best poem will be his next poem. \nThe Old Hats are dedicated to original American music and authentic frontier gibberish.  Jerry Dean aka “Jabo” does vocals and guitar\, and plays darn near everything else on occasion.  He is a music teacher\, retired professor and grandpa.  Robert Talmanson aka “Smoky” aka “Southernmost Smoky” is a relentless harmonica player\, musical historian and master of horrible jokes.  John Meinkowsky aka “John the Poet” does vocals and various percussion (hitting things with a stick).  He is a relatively novice musician and is lobbying for nomination to the Smart-Ass Hall of Fame. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

These artists were nominated by members of their community and were chosen by a panel of their peers to be recognized for their artistry and advocacy. We believe their perseverance to ignite the creative power in everyone is something we can all celebrate. \nWe are excited to announce our 2019 Haven Allen Artist of the Year Award in memory of past board member\, Forrest Haven Street-Allen. This award is given to an artist with a disability who\, through a one-time creative act or a substantial record of achievement\, embodies the vision of Art Spark Texas. San Antonio artist Susan Beattie is the founder and producer of the Mental Illness Awareness Week art exhibition\, held annually in San Antonio\, and she devotes her time year round to single handedly bring this important exhibition to the public. \nThis year\, we are pleased to announce the Lynn Marie Johnson Media Arts Award. SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Shake It Off!
DESCRIPTION:The falling leaves of autumn provide an apt analogy to the process by which we dispel the habits\, possessions\, and relationships we have outgrown. And in doing so\, we bring forth the opportunity for new growth to emerge when the next spring arrives. For us\, this letting go can be a terrifying prospect; but within the seasons\, it is integral to the cycles of death and rebirth\, for the green buds and vibrant flowers of spring can only manifest on seemingly lifeless branches. \nThis month we invite you to speak about the moments where shedding the past became your only way forward\, where casting the weight of the outgrown lightened your load just enough to carry on. What are the things you had to shake off\, however haltingly? What new opportunities emerged in their place? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 161 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.
