SUMMARY:“Waiting for the Bus” Script Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Art Spark Texas along with members of TILT Performance Group and ATX Theatre ConFab producers for a developmental reading of James Burnside’s “Waiting for the Bus\,” a new play on America’s long and troublesome history of institutionalizing people with disabilities. \nSynopsis: The history of the institutionalization of disabled people\, particularly people with intellectual and developmental disabilities\, in America began in the 1840s with the noble notion of “Moral Therapy.” That what would “cure” these people was light\, fresh air\, good food\, and honest work. Large gothic facilities were built in the countryside\, and they rapidly became overcrowded\, poorly maintained\, and poorly staffed while “patients” were subjected to all manner of experimental “procedures.” This play could easily have been just another horror show​. And that would certainly be a large portion of the truth\, but lost would be the humanity of the people who lived in these institutions—people with hopes and dreams and love\, people with family and friends. \nAfterwards\, stay for a talk led by AST Executive Director Celia Hughes where you can gain new perspectives about what it’s like to live with or without accommodations directly from cast and audience members living with disabilities and from advocates who specialize in providing accommodations. \nTHIS IS THE PLACE where you can finally ask all those burning questions about exactly how to create events that are more accessible to ALL audiences—with the added benefit of witnessing methods in action during the reading. \nWe will provide ASL interpreting\, audio description\, and open captions.

DESCRIPTION:MeetShareDance will take place in Austin from November 11th through the 13th\, 2022. \nMeetShareDance is a small immersive\, participatory international event where dance teachers/choreographers and other participants with and without disabilities exchange their knowledge on inclusive dance. DESCRIPTION:Earth Tones 2022: Exploring the Creative in Nature is presented by Art Spark Texas. It is a free art and nature retreat for Veterans and current and prior military and their family members. Read more about the activities and workshop instructors here! \nThis creative workshop will be held at Buescher State Park in Smithville\, TX from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and includes entry fee and lunch for the day. \nWe start as a group\, then break into three focused workshops for the day with a break for a catered lunch\, and a group wrap-up at the end. \nPlease choose your ticket based on the track you would like to follow for the entire day. All workshops will include time indoors and outdoors. \nPhotography – Bring your camera and join Nature Photographer Jerry Sargent in a workshop to gain skills in taking photos of nature. This indoor/outdoor workshop will include hikes around the park. \nVisual Art – Bring your drawing or painting materials (or use ours) and join Smithville artist Michael Golden as you create in nature. Be inspired by the plants and animals at the park and connect with others as you gather indoors and outdoors. \nCreative Writing – Bring paper and writing instruments and join author and professor Benjamin Reed for creative writing inspired by your natural surroundings. This indoor/outdoor activity will include hikes. \n**Notes: You must bring your own camera. Some art supplies provided. Plan for October weather conditions and what you can carry while walking. ADA accessible trails are available and there will be options for hikes based on your personal activity level. Service animals are allowed on leash. The package consists of an original song\, a choreographed dance performance\, & (this is where you come in!) a music-video-a-la-flash-mob. Join us! \nWHEN: Saturday\, March 26th\, 2022 between 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Fabulous fun along with breakfast & lunch will be served so plan to dance with us all day! Can only stay for half?
