SUMMARY:Art Spark Texas at Library Live!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Carver Branch Library for an afternoon of live music and art presented by Austin Public Library (APL) and Art Spark Texas. We are proud to present this showcase as part of Austin Veteran Arts Festival. Arrive at 11:30 AM for the opening reception of “From the Lens of a Veteran” photography exhibition! \nShow at 2:00 PM / Doors at 1:45 PM \nWith performances by:\nValor Alan\nMoana Tela\nNubia Emmon \nFree and open to the public! \nAbout the musicians: \nM.O.E (Moana Tela) is a singer-songwriter from American Samoa located in the South Pacific Ocean. M.O.E stands for Music Over Everything. The acronym was inspired by her love of diverse music. While visiting her mother’s island of Fiji\, she helped shape her outlook on music in a significant way. She realized the power of great energy expressed through music and was always prepared to perform. Although it was traditional to listen to island jams\, with reggae being the most popular sound. M.O.E was more interested in American music in the genres of hip-hop\, pop\, rap\, R&B\, and Rock. \nHearkening back to the nostalgic 90s when R&B/Hip Hop music was as versatile as its artists\, Nubia Emmon reminds us of that groundbreaking and exhilarating time period. She brings the cool laid back swag of an Aaliyah\, the energetic spontaneity of Left Eye’s rap and her own unique artistry to the music scene. She can move easily between performing danceable club tracks to a slow ballad such as “At Last” by Etta James. As unassuming as she is\, Nubia will you tell you she is your everyday home girl\, but make no mistake about it\, this R&B Singer/Rapper Nubia Emmon is the total package. From the “Capital of Live Music” – Austin\, Texas she comes from a family of artists including a distant cousin\, none other than The Queen of Gospel\, Mahalia Jackson. Realizing what it takes: sacrifice and hard work\, whether she is working in the studio\, at shows\, in the community or with other artists\, Nubia’s dream is to become a world class performer. Her fans seem to believe this too as she has been voted #1 by Austin listeners (Best Radio R&B Artist\, Best Female Radio Song and Best Female R&B Live). \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Shake It Off!
DESCRIPTION:The falling leaves of autumn provide an apt analogy to the process by which we dispel the habits\, possessions\, and relationships we have outgrown. And in doing so\, we bring forth the opportunity for new growth to emerge when the next spring arrives. For us\, this letting go can be a terrifying prospect; but within the seasons\, it is integral to the cycles of death and rebirth\, for the green buds and vibrant flowers of spring can only manifest on seemingly lifeless branches. \nThis month we invite you to speak about the moments where shedding the past became your only way forward\, where casting the weight of the outgrown lightened your load just enough to carry on. What are the things you had to shake off\, however haltingly? What new opportunities emerged in their place? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 161 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

DESCRIPTION:Share a story\, poem\, song\, or other talent in a fun and supportive neighborhood bookstore. The open mic is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us in advance to request other accommodations\, including ASL interpreting\, audio description\, etc. \nThis month we also have two featured guests: Spirit Thom and The Old Hats. \nSpirit Thom is a co-Founder of the Austin International Poetry Festival. He is an improvising bard who works with WORDJAZZ LOWSTARS\, and used to tour with MOTHER GONG\, KANGAROO MOON\, etc. He had his own bands FUTURE NOW in England\, and WE ARE ALIVE! in Australia—and Thom believes his best poem will be his next poem. \nThe Old Hats are dedicated to original American music and authentic frontier gibberish.  Jerry Dean aka “Jabo” does vocals and guitar\, and plays darn near everything else on occasion.  He is a music teacher\, retired professor and grandpa.  Robert Talmanson aka “Smoky” aka “Southernmost Smoky” is a relentless harmonica player\, musical historian and master of horrible jokes.  John Meinkowsky aka “John the Poet” does vocals and various percussion (hitting things with a stick).  He is a relatively novice musician and is lobbying for nomination to the Smart-Ass Hall of Fame. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Moments of Growth
DESCRIPTION:“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back to safety.” –Abraham Maslow \nGrowing is an essential part of life. Sometimes we are lucky enough to choose when and how we grow; other times growth is sprung upon us – and often painfully. In either case we can be relatively certain that resisting personal growth ultimately creates more trouble. This month we invite you to share the definitive moments that provided you the opportunity to grow into the person you are now. What circumstances or knowledge compelled you to evolve? What insights did you glean from these spurts of growth? And how do these moments continue to shape who you are\, and who you want to be? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 101 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Art Spark Texas at Library Live!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Carver Branch Library for an afternoon of live music presented by Austin Public Library (APL) and Art Spark Texas! \nShow at 2:00 PM / Doors at 1:45 PM \nWith performances by:\nDude Choir\nCook and Rose \nFree and open to the public! \nAbout the musicians: \nEric Clow (aka Dude Choir when other friends are involved) is an artist torn between a classic rock past and dissonant future. He uses a mixture of humor\, sincerity\, and slightly off-key vocals to deliver thoughtful personal tunes. Stream his debut album here. \nChristopher Cook and Emmy Rose are a duo from Central Texas\, playing original music rooted in folk and blues. Their songs of sadness\, loss\, and defiance reflect their Western roots and longing for redemption. Christopher Cook plays finger-style guitar\, writes\, and sings. With over thirty years as a songwriter and performer\, he has been called “a torch singer with the heart of a poet.” Emmy Rose also sings and plays the harmonium\, a type of pump organ originally used in Indian music. Together\, the blend of Emmy’s direct\, clear voice with Christopher’s ragged tenor produces an unusual sound described as “diamonds and gravel.” \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Independence
DESCRIPTION:July is the month we celebrate our nation’s independence. It also marks possibly the most important victory in the history of the Disability Rights Movement: the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For people with disabilities\, independence has different meanings. On one hand\, it is the ultimate goal; if achieved\, it signifies the successful dismantling of the social and political barriers that truly “disable” us. If\, on the other hand\, independence proves to be a logistical impossibility\, we adjust our definition accordingly\, and independence becomes something closer to self-determination in which we set the terms for the assistance we require – or in the words of our movement’s slogan\, Nothing About Us Without Us. This month we invite you to share your own definition of independence: what does independence look like for you\, what are the obstacles that stand in your way to a self-determined life\, how do you become independent? \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 101 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. We welcome adults with disabilities who are interested in presenting stories and meeting other speakers. Email Eric Clow to RSVP or learn more. \nYou can also RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:OMOD Showcase 2019
DESCRIPTION:Opening Minds\, Opening Doors (OMOD) is a public speaker training program for adults with disabilities. Through an intensive six-week writing workshop\, participants craft personal stories and develop public speaking skills to transform those stories into powerful presentations. \nWe invite you to a showcase of stories that run the gamut of life experiences – from work and family to advocacy\, immigration\, forays into the theatre\, and more. Together these presentations will shatter misconceptions about what it means to live with a disability and remind us that everyone\, regardless of ability and background\, shares a common humanity. RSVP\, invite your friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nDoors open at 1:45 PM // Show starts at 2:00 PM \nJoin us in the theatre lobby after the showcase for our “Paws and Claws” Art Pop-Up and “Pet Love” Reception! \nDirections to the Ground Floor Theatre: The theatre is located where Springdale and Airport meet\, behind Austin Bouldering Project and Daily Greens\, tucked between Austin East Ciders and Friends and Allies Brewery. Park in our parking lot\, which is accessible off Springdale\, just past Daily Greens\, and around the back of the building. You can also find a map at www.groundfloortheatre.org and a helpful video at https://vimeo.com/286364861

SUMMARY:Art Spark Texas at Library Live!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Carver Branch Library for an evening of live music presented by Austin Public Library (APL) and Art Spark Texas! \nShow at 6:00 PM / Doors at 5:45 PM \nWith performances by:\nThe Semi-Modulars\nThe New Motown: The TSBVI Jazz Ensemble \nFree and open to the public! \nAbout the musicians: \nThe Semi-Modulars are an all-synth band made up of students in the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired’s synthesis and sound design class. The students use a combination of analog and digital synthesizers\, samplers\, drum machines\, and modular synthesizers to compose and record original compositions. \nJazz at TSBVI dates back to the 1980s. However\, after laying dormant for some time\, the Jazz program was revived under the leadership of Sasha Klare-Ayvazian in 2015. Today\, the TSBVI Jazz Ensemble\, known as “The New Motown\,” has enjoyed four wonderful seasons of growth\, song learning\, team building\, and performing. The New Motown has performed seasonally at TSBVI semester concerts\, at SCASB\, and at Cherrywood Coffee. The New Motown recorded a 2018 album that can be heard here. And in 2019\, former band member Devin Gutierrez became the ensemble’s assistant director. The 2019 band consists of Victoria Sanders (flute\, vocals)\, Brandon Aleman (clarinet\, vocals)\, Andres Salas (drums\, trombone)\, and Ray Garza (guitar) with Sasha Klare-Ayvazian (director\, bass) and assistant director Devin Gutierrez (piano\, vocals). \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912.

SUMMARY:Speaking Advocates: Home Ain't What It Used To Be
DESCRIPTION:Home is where we start\, yet it is much more than simply a place. It is the reference point by which we measure how we ourselves have changed\, it is how we interpret the changes swirling around us and observe the passage of time. And the more we change\, so too does our recollection of the past\, our remembrance of home. This month we invite you to share the ways in which your perception of home has shifted over time and how you have changed in the process. \nOur Opening Minds\, Opening Doors Speaking Advocates group is free and meets the last Saturday of every month from 1-3 PM in Room 130 of the AGE of Central Texas Building. SUMMARY:The Lion and The Pirate Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Share a story\, poem\, song\, or other talent in a fun and supportive neighborhood bookstore. The open mic is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us at least one week in advance to request other accommodations\, including ASL interpreting\, audio description\, etc. \nIn addition to our regular open mic for performers of all ages and abilities\, this month we are delighted to have a special guest\, Elizabeth L. Sammons\, who will share with us her debut novel\, The Lyra and the Cross. \nFriendship\, forgiveness and faith set the groundwork of The Lyra and the Cross\, a historical novel depicting the political and spiritual unrest in the first-century Roman Empire. Drawing on five years of historical research and on her own cross-cultural experience as journalist\, Peace Corps volunteer and interpreter\, Ohio author Elizabeth Sammons depicts a world as full of interfaith conflict and difficult choices as our own. Amidst familiar characters from the New Testament\, readers will find stories of a slave turned freedman\, a Greek orphan adopted into life as a Jew and two bittersweet love stories set against a background of cross-cultural conflict comparable to events we witness in the 21st century. \nElizabeth L. Sammons is a two-time recipient of the Ohio Arts Council’s Artists with Disability Access Program Award. She lives in Worthington\, Ohio\, holds an M.A. in journalism from Ohio State University\, and has lived in five foreign countries. Her love of both scripture and Greek mythology dates back to childhood. To her knowledge\, this is the only modern English-language novel featuring St. Stephen as its protagonist. \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912. \n

SUMMARY:Art Spark Texas at Library Live!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Carver Branch Library for an afternoon of live music presented by Austin Public Library (APL) and Art Spark Texas! \nShow at 2:00 PM / Doors at 1:45 PM \nWith performances by:\nSnehi\nTeel Montague\nThe Spinrockers \nFree and open to the public! \nAbout the musicians: \nThe Spinrockers are a local duo featuring multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Devin Gutierrez and vocalist Mary Rose Bushland. This month they plan to bring some Christmas classics and a few original compositions. \nTeel Montague is an engaging singer/songwriter/storyteller with an acoustic folk and blues sound. As she says\, “My life experience and desire for honest expression direct my creation of melody\, instrumentation\, and lyrics. I aspire to be as sincere and unaffected in my vocals and writing as possible\, in order to convey an accessible message. Often I simply sit down with my guitar and play chords and notes that match whatever soul issue I am trying to process. The lyrics generally flow out of that.” \nSnehi plays around with Indian and Western music to create music that speaks to him in some way. His latest album CHALU (the Telugu word for ‘enough’) was based on his journey of learning to laugh again. Most of his songs are written in Telugu or English\, and offer a glimpse into the complex mind of this simple man\, something he hopes will get us thinking about our funny world. \nYou can RSVP\, invite friends\, and follow our Facebook event page for updates. \nFor more information email Eric Clow or call 512-454-9912.
