SUMMARY:Lion & Pirate Virtual Inclusive Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:The Lion & Pirate’s LAST gathering of 2025 is Sunday\, December 14\, at 1 pm CT!\n\nJoin us on Zoom for a virtual\, inclusive open mic! Zoom link posted here the day of the open mic.\nSign up to perform or attend! https://forms.gle/98NWR6PexU29FZ679\n(Are you playing music? Make sure your Zoom settings are configured for original sound: https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb…)\n\nAs always\, we’re open to work in any genre: music\, spoken word\, improv\, skits\, storytelling\, dance\, poems\, prose… Anything you can perform in 3(ish) minutes! Read on for community guidelines and accessibility adventure notes.\n\nCommunity Guidelines: please read the Art Spark Texas code of conduct before Lion & Pirate events: https://www.artsparktx.org/code-of-conduct/\n\nThings we believe:– We feel and practice respect for all people and for diversity of thought and identity.– We see honesty as a form of love.– We acknowledge that free speech is difficult sometimes.– We accept that we are unaware of the traumas people within even our own communities are trying to live through\, and we have to teach each other\, learn from each other\, make each other more aware.\n\nAccessibility adventure notes for virtual performers or attendees:Captions: Zoom has auto-generated captions\, and those are… ok. When possible\, we screen share the words/ lyrics/ poems to each performance so that attendees who need closed captions (CC) get better quality info. Performers are welcome to: screen share their words themselves\, so they can stay on screen OR send an L&P host their words and they’ll do the screen sharing OR paste a link to a document with their words in the chat\, so attendees can decide if they want to see the words or not. If sharing your words ahead of time is not in the cards\, that’s ok\, we’ll do our best to make it work!.Sound quality: We ask all attendees to stay muted when not performing (or cheering). Are you performing with an instrument or accompanying music? Learn how to configure your Zoom settings for a live musical performance: https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb…\n\nAccess requests: Need something else for virtual OR in person participation? Get in touch with Laura P by DM or email lperna@txdisabilities.org

So far she has toured in 45 states and 9 countries\, captivating audiences around the world with her unique mix of haunting original songs and traditional fiddle tunes. Gaelynn Lea has appeared in several major festivals over the years\, including SXSW\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, and Reykjavik Arts Festival. She has opened for well-known bands such as Wilco\, The Decemberists\, LOW\, The Jayhawks\, and the industrial rock supergroup Pigface. \n  \nGaelynn Lea poses with her violin.\nGaelynn Lea performs from her electric wheelchair. She began playing violin 26 years ago after a creative music teacher helped her to adapt a playing style that suits her frame. Lea holds her instrument like a tiny cello and loops her classically trained rhythms and melodies with her Memory Man pedal to create a “symphonic cacophony that is both glorious in its reach and profoundly introspective”. (Ear to the Ground) Her original songs explore the contrasting nature of existence—dark and light\, birth and death\, anger and forgiveness\, sorrow and joy. Gaelynn Lea’s “music is imbued with a melancholic poetry so potent it must be heard to be believed.” (Boston Globe) \n  \nIn addition to performing and recording\, Gaelynn also does speaking engagements about Disability Rights\, finding inner freedom\, and accessibility in the arts. In recent years\, she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change. So far she’s been able to share her perspective on PBS NewsHour\, BBC World News\, The Moth Radio Hour\, and through two widely-viewed TEDx Talks. \nGaelynn Lea is currently working on a memoir about her touring adventures and disability advocacy that she plans to release in 2022. Since the Coronavirus pandemic halted her traveling\, Gaelynn has been performing a weekly concert on YouTube to fans who join her every Sunday afternoon from all over the world. \nAbout ART SPARK TEXAS\nArt Spark Texas challenges perceptions of how people contribute by creating an arts-inspired\, inclusive community of individuals with diverse abilities. \nIf you enjoy our Community Conversations Songwriting Series\, please consider making a Donation today.
