Audio Described Performance of “The Rover”

The Hidden Room 311 W. 7th Street, Austin, TX, United States

In 1677, poet, libertine, and sometime spy for Charles II, Aphra Behn was the first published professional female playwright in the English language. Her play The Rover, or the Banish’d Cavaliers was wildly popular in the Court, but Behn was dismissed as lewd by critics due to her frank depiction of female sexual longing. The Hidden Room presents this rarely-performed delight as a mash-up of 1677 and 1983 - a Restoration/New Romantic proto-feminist sex romp, complete with swashbuckling sword fights, forbidden romance, masked revelers, and bitchen live music.
