Treading Lightly: Jonah Dillon’s Bold Journey Through Art & Innovation
We’re thrilled to celebrate the absolutely delightful Jonah Dillon as Art Spark Texas’ Artist of the Month for July!
Jonah Dillon (he/him) is an Austin-based artist whose creativity is fueled by passion, ingenuity, and fearless experimentation. Living with muscular dystrophy, Jonah has continuously adapted his artistic process, developing a bold and physical style uniquely his own, created using the wheels of his power wheelchair.
This month, we’re proud to launch an online auction of Jonah’s original live-painted canvases, created at our 29th Annual Art in the Park event. Proceeds will support our Summer Spark Campaign, which funds a vital needs assessment focused on expanding access and opportunities for disabled youth in the arts.
A Creative Spirit from the Start
Jonah has always found ways to create. As a child, he loved to draw. Over time, as muscular dystrophy made traditional tools more difficult to use, he began experimenting with new methods. In high school, pencil sketches evolved into watercolor experiments, an early sign of his willingness to adapt and push boundaries.
His breakthrough came in a moment of playful curiosity. While filming videos of himself running over objects with his wheelchair, Jonah discovered that paint, unlike the ketchup bottles he originally used, left behind beautiful, expressive trails. With his grandmother's help in setting up canvas and materials, he began experimenting with this new technique, transforming the motion of his wheels into art.
Painting with Motion: The Wheelchair as Brush
Jonah’s unique method involves covering his wheelchair tires in press-and-seal wrap to prevent mess, then layering on acrylic paint mixed with Flow Trial to achieve a dripping, fluid texture. He paints on both loose canvas and canvas boards, the former requiring more paint due to its flexibility but Jonah's process varies. Sometimes he applies one color at a time, carefully building up layers. Other times, he’ll lay down multiple hues at once for a more dynamic, chaotic energy. Because each pass of the tire is unique, creating “matching” pieces requires doing several at once, capturing that spontaneous movement in real time.
Audiences got to witness this incredible process firsthand during our 29th Annual Art in the Park at Fiesta Gardens in April, where Jonah performed a live wheelchair painting session amidst the chaotic festival energy. Soon, we will be launching a live auction featuring Jonah’s work to support Art Spark Texas and continue uplifting artists with disabilities - stay tuned on Instagram for more details!
Bigger Canvases, Bigger Ideas
Jonah prefers working on larger canvases, ideally 2x2 feet, where the full movement of his chair can be expressed. He’s exhibited in group and solo shows, including an energetic live art and music event at Almost Real Things and a standout exhibition at Propaganda. Whether in a quiet studio or a lively event space, Jonah finds beauty in motion and the physicality of the process.
Collaborators and Creative Community
Creativity is a shared experience for Jonah. His grandmother continues to be an important collaborator, visiting regularly from Connecticut. His mother, brother, and close friends have each influenced his work in different ways as well, some guiding, others following his lead. He’s also explored collaborative projects with fellow creatives, including a graphic design student who makes custom knives. His brother, once focused on music, is now immersed in fashion design, hand-sewing jackets and pants, proof that artistic energy runs deep in Jonah’s world.
The Future
You can explore more of Jonah’s work and learn about upcoming projects at Tread Lightly, a site named after one of his early shows, and a perfect expression of how he moves through the world: thoughtfully, creatively, and with unmistakable impact.
